Exploring our 5 Senses in the STEAM Lab

We got to explore our five senses in the science lab (AKA STEAM lab) today. They got to rotate around to different stations to learn about each sense. Station one was taste and the kids got to taste a Q-tip dipped in different liquids. They had to decide whether it was sour, sweet, bitter, or salty. The kids loved this one and it was entertaining to see their faces after tasting certain ones. Station two was sight where they had to look through a magnifying glass to see if they could guess which bag matched what was in the cup. Some examples were corn starch, sugar, salt, etc. It was interesting to see if they could figure them out because some of them looked alike. Station three was smell where the kids had to guess what was in the coffee mug by smelling the top of the cup. Some examples of this were syrup, mint, chocolate, banana, etc. I noticed this one was hard for the kids if they had never experienced that smell before, which makes sense! Station four was touch and the kids had to feel different objects and talk about their textures. They also got to put on gloves and a blindfold and then had to find different objects. It was much harder without being able to see and feel the objects clearly. Station five was the sense of hearing. There were different objects in brown paper bags and the kids had to shake the bag to see if they could guess what was in there by listening to the sound it made. They also watched how the vibrations of sound could move salt when a cookie pan was hit beside the pile of salt. This lab was perfect for the kids to explore and learn about their five senses. It was hands on (literally), they were engaged, and they had fun learning! I want to thank all my parent volunteers for your time and help with this. We couldn't have done it without you! You all ROCK!
